L5 – What is a Website?

LO: To describe how content can be added and accessed on the World Wide Web (WWW)

In today’s lesson, we have been learning about the features of websites. We have explored different types of website and looked at the most important parts of these. We considered how pictures, videos, text, logos and more all help to make a website interesting and easy to access for the users that visit it. Next, we talked about the content that was included on websites and thought about who would have been responsible for adding this. We answered the question ‘who can add information to the World Wide Web?’ by realising that the answer was anyone! This made us think about how accurate the things we find online might be…

L4 – Sharing Information

LO: To outline how websites can be shared via the World Wide Web (WWW)

Today in Computing, Year 4 have been exploring how information is shared via the World Wide Web. We talked about and explained the different media that can be shared and thought about where this is all stored. We looked at a map of Google Data centres and considered how information is passed around the globe. Finally we thought about how websites are accessed via web browser and named some of these.

L3 – Exploring Websites and iPad logins

Today we were introduced to our new iPad logins and we spent the lesson how to login and sign out correctly. Using our new accounts we were also able to access the World Wide Web through the internet and explore some different websites, considering what each one offered to the person visiting. We learned that the internet and the World Wide Web are two different things, and that the WWW uses the internet to share information with others.

L2 – What is the internet made of?

In Year 4 today we talked about what the internet is made of. We began by exploring the learning from last lesson and identified the parts of a network that allow it to connect to other networks and form the internet. We then looked at how these connections are made and the devices (routers) that allow us to do this. We discussed how routers connect to one another and found ‘routes’ through our own maps of the internet, before designing our own questions for others to try.

L1 – Connecting Networks

Today in Computing we have been exploring networks and the internet. Building on our knowledge from Year 3, we modelled how messages are passed around networks using switches. We then looked at how some networks can be connected to others in order to share information by passing messages around the classroom ourselves! We talked about how the internet works in a similar way to this. Finally we discussed the importance of network security and how to keep our information safe.

Creating Media – Photo Editing L4

Today we looked at how images can be edited after they are taken – this is called retouching. We explored some of the tools used for this purpose and applied them to some pictures of fruit that looked less than their best! By using a combination of the clone tool and the recolour feature we were able to make our fruit look more appealing using the software. We discussed whether this was a good use of computers and whether or not this was fair to the people who saw our images. We talked about how these tools can be used to change people too, and how firms might use this to profit.

Y4 Hackathon

Y4 had a brilliant day today as they took part in our first ever ‘hackathon’. As part of the Do Your :bit Challenge the children were tasked with designing a technological solution to real world problems. These were aligned with the UN’s Global Goals and included aims such as Climate Change and Health and Wellbeing. The children worked exceptionally hard on this project and produced some fantastic ideas, of their own, from low-cost smart watches to automatic fire fighters! These were then coded using our brand new Micro:bits to see how they would work in the real world! We were really impressed by the children’s enthusiasm and passion for the project, and they should all be extremely proud of themselves. Well done Year 4!
